- You're not going to like this, but setting up STIK is not one of the easiest
- tasks. It is not incredibly hard, but will take a fair amount of time.
- The very first thing to do is, if you own a Falcon, to install some kind of
- patch program which fixes a rather nasty bug in Bconmap(). I know that HSMOD
- does it, and FPATCH (which is included in this package) will also do it. If
- you don't own a Falcon then you're lucky (for once).
- Next you'll need to copy STIK.ACC to the main directory of the drive you
- boot up from (a disk for floppy users, and usually C: for hard drive users).
- Then you need to copy the _directory_, not the files in the directory, to
- the same place. If you want you can have this directory in a different
- place. Details on how to do this are in STIK\README.
- Once that's done you can do the actual setup. First of all you need to run
- LISTPORT.TOS from the STIK\EXE directory. This will tell you which modem
- port you need to use. Write this down on a piece of paper, you'll need. Then
- edit the file DEFAULT.CFG in the STIK_CFG directory which you copied, not
- the one you copied from. (For floppy users this would be
- A:\STIK_CFG\DEFAULT.CFG) Go through the file while reading all the comments,
- which are clear enough so you should be able to get the idea. If you end up
- having problems connecting, make 100% sure the following variables are set
- up right, because they are necessary:
- SERIALPORT, CDVALID and NAMESERVER
- Once you've done this you need to edit the STIK_CFG\DIAL.SCR file, which is
- in the same place as the file you just edited. The easiest way of doing this
- is first do exactly what you want to do in a normal communications program,
- and then save, or preferably print the capture buffer of what happened. Then
- you have all the data you need handy. Edit the DIAL.SCR file as appropriate,
- and save it. There are example files in the STIK\SCRIPTS directory. (Thanks
- Denesh!)
- Now, on a partition of your hard disk with plenty of free space (or on the
- floppy disk, if you don't have a hard disk) create a directory named CACHE.
- Start up HTML.PRG and select the menu item "Paths" under "Options". Click on
- the path under "Cache Path" and go to the CACHE directory you just created
- when the file selector pops up. Then click OK. Save the options, and quit
- the program. (This is a really important step, make sure you get it right,
- otherwise you won't be able to view any webpages.)
- The next step is to reboot, so STIK.ACC will actually be loaded into memory.
- If Stik complains there isn't a cookie jar, then you need to stick JAR10.PRG
- (in the PATCHES directory) in the auto-folder. Once that's done select it
- from the "Desktop" menu and click on "Connect". If you have done all that
- you had to do right so far it will go through various message, and finally
- tell you you're connected. If it doesn't, have a look at the status it times
- out on, and edit the appropriate file (DEFAULT.CFG if the status was
- "Connecting", otherwise DIAL.SCR). Next, try running a program. IRC.TOS is
- pretty much bug-free (at least in its connections) so it's a good program to
- test with. If it succesfully connects to the server, you can either hang
- around on IRC (/join #atari) or quit (/quit) and run the browser. Using the
- browser is fairly straight-forward, but detailed information about it is in
- CAB\DOC\CAB_X.TXT. To get started call up the hotlist
- (alternate-H) and double click on one of the entries. Enjoy the 'Net! When
- you run into problems, please read the FAQ (thanks Denesh!) first before you
- try mailing me or posting to the newsgroup.
